PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STEALING AND CHEATING

MEGHAN COSTA PERIOD C

MY TOPIC

  • The topic that I chose to research was stealing and cheating, as well as academic integrity, and the effect it has had on students today

FEEHAN'S CONSEQUENCES FOR CHEATING (Plagiarism)

  • 1st offense: Grade on assignment is a 0, Saturday detention, ineligible for honor roll
  • 2nd offense: Grade on assignment is a 0, Saturday detention, possible suspension
  • 3rd offense: expulsion
  • Students are removed from any honor societies

THE CHURCH'S CONSEQUENCES FOR STEALING (AS SEEN IN SCRIPTURE)

  • "You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another" (Leviticus 19:11)
  • "Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy" (1 Corinthians 4:2)

Similarities Between Feehan/Church's Teachings

  • Feehan does not tolerate cheating/academic integrity in any way
  • The Church does not either because cheating is considered a sin
  • Both Feehan and the Church call us to live honest, truthful lives

THE CHURCH'S CONSEQUENCES FOR STEALING (AS SEEN IN TEXTBOOK)

  • Article 32 (The Moral Law and Material Possessions)
  • Article 33 (The Call to Be Just)
  • Article 34 (Calling Society to Justice)
  • Article 35 (Envy and Greed)
  • Article 36 (Live Simply So others May Simply Live

USCCB TEACHINGS ABOUT CHEATING

  • Reminds us that cheating is a sin
  • When we cheat on others, we cheat ourselves as well as our relationship with God
  • Cheating is wrong
  • We are called to be honest people not cheaters

OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS

  • Says more and more students are struggling with their academic integrity
  • When students cheat, they don't think ahead of all the consequences
  • On a religious view, cheating is a sin that should not be committed

MORAL CONCLUSION ON THIS TOPIC

  • I have come to the conclusion that cheating is something that shouldn't be done. Even if it is a tempting situation, we should not cheat because of the consequences. The consequences will damage our character, reputation as a student, and relationship with God
