LOCATION

  • Located on Ross Island, Antarctica
  • Antarctic plate
  • Divergent plate boundary
  • Cause of volcano was rifting

CLASSIFICATION

  • Composite Volcano (Stratovolcano)
  • Both nonexplosive and explosive eruptions.

FACTS AND HISTORY

  • In 1841 James Ross discovered Mount Erebus with his crew, Mount Erebus is now located on Ross Island but was attached to antarctica until 1995 when the ice shelf collapsed and the land that broke off became Ross Island.

CONTINUED

  • Mount Erebus erupts very frequently and has been erupting since 1972.
  • Around the volcano is just ice and cold air because it is to dangerous to live near a very active volcano but scientist plan to have a research site there in the future.

HAZARDS/RISKS

  • Some hazards include eruptions are very frequent, Mt. Erebus is a composite volcano so the eruptions could be explosive or nonexplosive either way it is dangerous.
  • It is not safe to live near Mount Erebus because it is very cold and it erupts very frequently and eruptions can do serious damage.

CONCLUSION

  • My prediction is that Mt. Erebus will keep erupting for a few more years, then it will stop for about 2 years, and have another nonexplosive eruption.
  • Since Mt. Erebus erupts frequently and for long periods of time I think it will only be a few years between eruptions.
