  • Hardships they faced:
  • *fur thieves,attacks by Indians, attacks by wild animals
  • Accidents and the weather
  • Legacies: trading post became supply store and journals

THE MISSIONARIES

  • They moved west to teach the secrets of the bible
  • Hardships they faced: the group split up .
  • Indian culture hard to understand and not many Indians converted
  • Legacies they left: open the west to settlement.

THE PIONEER WOMEN

  • Moved west to dedicate statue to sacagawea.
  • Looking for homesteads,husbands, and new opportunity.
  • Hardships they faced: hard journeys (cooking,cleaning, caring kids)
  • Legacies they left: brought out new strengths and abilities

THE FORTY-NINERS

  • They moved west to search for gold
  • Hardships they faced: camps were rough and dangerous
  • Very little gold was found.
  • Legacies they left: within 1 year California had enough people to become the first state in the far west
