The state mammal is the Grey Squirrel. During the fall and winter the Grey Squirrel survives on a diet of hardwoods and eats acorns that provide carbohydrates and proteins. The Grey Squirrel feels more at home when it's in a untouched wilderness, some squirrels eat small insects and even sometimes they eat young snakes. The nest the Grey Squirrel's make are called dreys.
The state wildflower is The Carolina Lily. Carolina Lily's are often pollinated by the butterfly called Swallowtail Butterfly. The Carolina Lily's petals are a brilliant red orange with brown spots. Carolina Lily's can bloom as late as October.
The state red berry is the Strawberry. In 2000 strawberry farmers produced 23,000,000 pounds of Strawberries. Strawberries are very high in the Vitamins C and A. Strawberries are the first fruit to be ripe during the spring.
The state flower is the Dogwood Blossom. Dogwoods appear in the Spring and continue into the Summer. Dogwood are often found in white and shades of pink. In 1941 the Dogwood was designated to be the state flower.
The state dog is the Plott Hound. The Plott Hound was adopted on August 12,1989 as the state dog. The Plott Hound is a legendary hunting dog. Plott Hounds are gentle and loyal companions to hunters. The Plott Hound has a beautiful brindle colored coat.
The state academy is Oak Ridge Military Academy. The Oak Ridge Military Academy is the third oldest military school in the United States. Oak Ridge Male Institute became one of the best private schools in North Carolina. At Oak Ridge,several academy baseball players went to play in the Major Leagues. Today Oak Ridge is a private and coeducational college.
The state song is the Old North State. On February 18,1927 The Old North State was adopted as the state song of North Carolina. The lyrics to The Old North State were composed by Judge William in Raleigh in 1835. The Old North State received nationwide attention during the 1840's. Gaston the writer of the song, was writing at the time when North Carolina was one of the poorest states in all the nation.
The state reptile is the Eastern Box Turtle. In 1979 The Eastern Box Turtle was designated as the official state reptile of North Carolina, The Eastern Box Turtle is found along the entire East Coast of the United States. Eastern Box Turtles are omnivorous. An Eastern Box Turtle can live up to 100 years.
The state fruit is the Scuppernong Grape. Scuppernong a Grapes were designated to be the state fruit in 2001. Scuppernong Grape is a greenish, bronze color. Scuppernong Grapes are very small.
