MRSA

  • A common staph bacteria that causes difficult-to-treat infections in different parts of the body

SYMPTOMS

  • Mild infections on skin like ,sores or boils
  • Serious infections or infect surgical wounds like , infection in the blood streams,lungs or urinary tract

WHO IS AT RISK ?

  • Everyone who is in contact with the bacteria

HOW IS IT SPREAD ?

  • By contact
  • You may get it person to person or object to person
  • Ex, touching a person who has it on its skin or touching an object that has the bacteria on them

HOW DOES IT SPREAD IN THE HOSPITAL ?

  • Doctors, nurses and employees can get the infection by touching sheets,towels, clothes,dressing ect.
  • Also doctors and nurses may carry the infection and become colonized with the bacteria and pass it to a patient who is ill or wounded

HOW TO PREVENT FROM SPREADING

  • @Hospital
  • Wash you hands ,clean hospital rooms and medical equipment , if visitors are allowed provide them with the right PPE
  • @HOME
  • If wounded make sure you know how properly take care of it

HOW DO WE TREAT THE DISEASE IN THE HOSPITAL

  • MRSA is resistant to many antibiotics and is difficult to treat there are still a few antibiotics that can cure MRSA ,( but those who are colonized with MRSA usually don't need tx
  • Serious infections they use vancomycin, linezolid (Zyvox),rifampin (Rifadin),sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Bactrim DS, Septra, Septra DS, SMZ-TMP DS, Sulfatrim Pediatric).and others).
  • Minor infections -topical mupirocin (Bactroban)
  • Side effects
  • Vancomycin -allergic reaction ,low BP, wheezing ,indigestion, pain in back and chest
  • Bactroban-burning,stinging,itching,and pain in body until your body adjust to the medication

  • Cost for the total tx is $287,200 or $14,369 per patient
