FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS AND TREATMENT OF ELOPEMENT ACROSS TWO SCHOOL SETTINGS

Participant

Measurement

  • Elopement was defined as getting out of seat, turning away from the therapist, and running towards the door of the room.
  • 10-s partial-interval procedure
  • (target behavior occurred/number of intervals in the session)*100%

TWO SCHOOL SETTINGS

  • Classroom
  • Resource room
  • Current study evaluated the influence of assessment setting on the analysis and treatment of elopement. Towards this aim, separate functional analyses and corresponding interventions were compared in two relevant settings.

Tangible Condition

  • Tangible condition, a television and DVD player were present. The therapist played Joe's preferred DVD for 10 s prior to the session and turn off to start the session.
  • If he eloped, turn on the tv. and if he didn't come back, same as escape condition.

  • elopement was sensitive to different reinforcers across settings

Intervention Analysis

2 Types of Treatments

Attention-based Intervention

  • The attention-based intervention consisted of the teacher maintaining close proximity to Joe and remaining oriented towards him for the entire session.
  • physical contact, affirmative statements,
  • /30s

The Tangible-based Intervention

  • The tangible-based intervention consisted of continuous access to the DVD. Joe watched a small screen that the other students could not see with the volume reduced to minimize distractions in the classroom.
  • minimize the attention
