PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS MS?

  • A disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.
  • This results in loss of muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation.
  • When the brain is unable to send & receive messages, symptoms of MS form.

SYMPTOMS

  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle spasms
  • Numbness or abnormal sensation
  • Limited movement
  • Tremor in arm(s) or leg(s)

CONT.

  • Double vision
  • Hearing loss
  • Uncontrollable rapid eye movements
  • Vision loss
  • Facial pain, I.e. Tingling, burning, or crawling feeling

  • Decreased attention span
  • Poor judgement, memory loss
  • Depression
  • Dizziness, balance loss
  • Slurred speech

DIAGNOSIS

  • The Dr. must find damage in at least 2 separate areas.
  • Find evidence that damage has occurred at least one month apart.
  • Rule out any other probable options.
  • Look at medical history.
  • Imaging technology

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Grieving
  • Mood swings
  • Uncontrollable laughing and/or crying

  • There is no known cure.

MEDICINES FOR AIDING THOSE WITH MS.

  • Steroids (lessen severity of attacks)
  • Medicines to reduce muscle spasms
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Other health fixes

CAUSES

  • It is NOT autoimmune
  • Studies show that the farther you are from the equator, the higher the risk.
  • Those who move to different part of the area before age 15 aquire the risks of new area.
  • Being exposed to a greater amount of sunlight year-round increases chances.
  • Having low vitamin D.

CONT.

  • A virus, bacteria, or other infectious agent is a triggering factor.
  • Having a parent or sibling with MS can raise the risks of getting MS.

COMMON VIRUSES THAT CAUSE MS.

  • Measles
  • Canine Distemper.
  • Human herpes virus-6
  • Epstein-Barr
  • Chlamydia pneumonia.

HISTORY

  • Professor Jean-Martin Charcot discovered it.
  • However, it took awhile to acknowledge the disease as a disease.
  • It was recognized by Dr. Walter Moxon in 1873.
  • It was recognized in the US by Dr. Edward Seguin.
  • They learned it was more common in men than women.
