MUSCLE CRAMPS

DEFINITION

A CONTRACTED MUSCLE THAT IS NOT RELAXED.

CAUSES

  • Physical labor
  • Hot weather
  • Certain medicines
  • Overuse of muscle
  • Dehydration

SYMPTOMS

  • Will most likely start in the calf muscle
  • Sudden, sharp pain
  • You might see a lump of muscle tissue beneath your skin

FIRST AID
Have the muscle stretched out to counteract the cramp. Massage the muscle gently, but firmly. Finally apply heat, preferably moist heat. (Heated washcloth)

Advanced care
Doctors can give you drugs such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, or quinine can help relieve muscle cramps.
