PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Muscle System

By: Jazmin Lindseth and

Myology: the study of muscle structure, arrangement and actions of the muscles.

Untitled Slide

Untitled Slide

The muscle system is developed from 3 different types of muscle

Untitled Slide

SMOOTH MUSCLE

  • Weakest muscle
  • Involuntary
  • Contracts slowly
  • Can remain contracted for long periods of time

SMOOTH MUSCLE

  • Not striated
  • Includes he stomach, intestines, and blood vessels

Untitled Slide

SKELETAL MUSCLE

  • Only voluntary muscle group
  • Long cells with multiple nuclei
  • Striated
  • 400 muscles

Untitled Slide

CARDIAC MUSCLES

  • Heart muscles
  • Works 24/7
  • Strongest set of muscles in the body
  • Some striation
  • Regulated body heat

Untitled Slide

  • Actin:def: protein that forms the contractile filaments of the muscles cells(thin muscle fibers)
  • Myosin:def: fibrous protein (thick muscle connections)

MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS

CONTRACTIONS

  • Brain sends signal
  • Nerve impulses get sent to the muscle fibers
  • Calcium is released
  • Binds the myosin and actin
  • Power stoke occurs
  • ATP is used to release contraction
  • Cross ridge waits for calcium

Untitled Slide

FLEXORS AND EXTENSORS

Untitled Slide

A flexor is a group of muscles that work together to bend a joint

Untitled Slide

EXTENDORS

Extenders are a group of muscles that work together to extend and straighten joints

Untitled Slide

MUSCLE FATIGUE

Muscle fatigue:def: A state of exhaustion or loss of strength and/or muscle endurance following strenuous activity

Untitled Slide

Basically you just physically overwork yourself

Untitled Slide

TEACHING MOMENT

Untitled Slide

How are muscles, bones, and tendons related?

Untitled Slide

Untitled Slide

Tendons attach muscle to bone

How are ligaments relate to tendons, muscles, bones?

Ligaments attach bone to bone, similar to how tendons attach muscle to bone

Untitled Slide

ALL OR NOTHING RESPONSE

Def: the threshold response of each particular nerve cell and muscular fiber to a stimulus. A nerve cell with either fire completely or not at all; A muscle fiber will contract to its limit with a stimulus

10 MAJOR MUSCLES

MAJOR MUSCLES

  • Biceps
  • Triceps
  • Trapezius
  • Deltoids
  • Pectorals

MAJOR MUSCLES

  • Rectus abdominus
  • Hamstrings
  • Obliques
  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings

A FEW FUN FACTS

FUN FACTS

  • 17 muscles to smile and 42 to frown
  • The muscle system take up about 40% of a humans average body weight
  • Smallest muscle is in the ear
  • Muscles cannot push
