MUSCLE SYSTEM

BY: MELINDA HOLLAND

MUSCULAR SYSTEM

  • There is over 600 muscles that make up the muscular system.
  • Muscles are bundles of muscle fibers held together by connective tissue.

PROPERTIES OF MUSCLES

  • Excitability is the ability to respond to a stimulus.
  • Extensibility is the ability to be stretched.
  • Contractibility is the ability to become short and thick.
  • Elasticity is the ability to return to its original shape.

MAIN KINDS OF MUSCLES

  • There are three main kinds of muscles: cardiac, visceral, and skeletal.
  • Cardiac muscles form the walls of the heart and contracts to circulate blood.
  • Visceral muscles are found in the internal organs of the body and contracts to cause movement in these organs.
  • Skeletal muscles attach to the bones to provide movement and protect internal organs.

FUNCTION OF SKELETAL MUSCLES

  • Attach to bones to provide voluntary movement.
  • Produce heat and energy for the body.
  • Help maintain posture by holding the body erect.
  • Protect internal organs.

There are two ways that skeletal muscle can attach to bones one is tendons.

The other way that skeletal muscles attach to bones is fascia.

DISEASES

  • Fibromyalgia is chronic, widespread pain in specific muscle sites.
  • Muscular Dystrophy is actually a group of inherited diseases that lead to chronic, progressive muscle atrophy.
  • Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic condition where nerve impulses are not properly transmitted to the muscles.
  • Muscle Spasms are sudden, painful, involuntary muscle contractions.
  • A strain is an over stretching of or injury to a muscle and or tendon.
