  • Reggae, style of popular music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and quickly emerged as the country’s dominant music. By the 1970s it had become an international style that was particularly popular in Britain, the United States, and Africa. The music has regular chops on the back/off beat. These are called “skank” usually played by a guitarist

Ska and Rocksteady

Ska

  • Ska developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when sound systems were made to play American rhythm & blues popularised by Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed in Jamaica . Then when blues trend finished they began recording their own songs.

rocksteady

  • A successor of ska and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by Jamaican vocal harmony
  • The term rocksteady comes from a dance style that was mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rock Steady"

  • The bizarre, wild dance done to the music known as Ska. Not to be confused with a, "skank" skanking resembles running in place while flailing your arms.

  • Rastafari is an African religion which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s, following the coronation of Haile Selassie I as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1930
  • This encouraged love and equality for white and black (not being racist) .
  • The three colors are also those of Ethiopia's flag. And to a Rasta, each color has a symbolic meaning: red represents the blood, green the beauty of Africa/Ethiopia, and gold/yellow, the wealth of Africa/Ethiopia.
