Nickname "lady day" by her musical partner, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. She became famous for singing a 'protest song' which became one of her standards and made famous in 1939.
In Harlem she started singing in various night clubs. In her early singing career, her influences were Billie Dove and her father.
From 1929- 1931 she and neighbour were a duet performing in clubs.
By the 1950's, Holiday's drug abuse, drinking and relationships with abusive men caused her health to deteriorate. Her health and voice declining it no longer projected to its form vibrancy.
Holiday said she always wanted her voice to sound like an instrument and her influences on that was Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. Her last major recording in 1958 featured the backing of 40 piece orchestra.
Holiday later died from liver and heart disease and was arrested at her death bed, police guarding her room.
