Intro
Music in the '20s and '30s was a past- time for many Americans. No electronic instruments were used like today and everything was done with instruments and singing. During the '30s and the depression it helped many Americans get through the tough times and helped them forget about their problems as they listened to it on the radio.

  • Jazz music was the most popular during that time
  • Louis Armstrong was arguably the most popular Jazz artist of all
  • All music was played in Broadway in both decades

3 DIFFERENCES OF THE '20S AND '30S

  • The Blues were mostly common in the 1920s
  • Country and Western style of music was mostly popular in the '30s
  • Swing was a type of Jazz music that was very popular in the '30s

TIMELINE

  • 1920 - The first Blues song by an African American singer
  • 1924 - George Gershwin premiers Rhapsody in Blue
  • 1925 - Louis Armstrong begins recording with his two bands which helped him launch his career
  • 1926 - The first jazz concert is held in Chicago pat the Coliseum

TIMELINE

  • 1929 - The first commercially sponsored radio broadcast features Leopold Stokowski and the orchestra
  • 1930 - Chicago becomes the center for the Blues record industry
  • 1931 - Opera is broadcasted on the radio for the first time in the United States
  • 1933 - Engineer Edwin Armstrong first demonstrates the possibility of FM radio

  • 1934 - Bob Wills begins performing in Tulsa, Oklahoma, establishing his career in the evolving field of Western swing
  • 1939 - The most successful movie musical of the era, The Wizard of Oz, is released
