SUNNI AND SHI'A

• The difference between them is:
• The Sunni felt the Caliphs need to live their life like the prophet of Muhammad
• The shi'a felt the Caliphs should be a relative of the prophet of Muhammad.

THE MUSLIM EMPIRES MILITARY

• The military was so successful because:
• Weakness of the Byzantine and Persian empires
• Soldiers were really faithful and felt they were doing word of Allah
• They has wearing down tactics, to wore down empires

MECCA-MEDINA-MECCA

• Prophet of Muhammad and his followers were forced to leave Mecca
• The Pilgrimage(Hajj) came from the movement from Mecca to medina
• While in medina, Muhammad fellowship swells
• The followers and Muhammad move back to Mecca
• Hajj is still honored by building a central house for worship of Islam

MAJOR GEOGRAPHIC

• One major geographic feature in the Middle East is deserts
• The feature impacted the development of clans throughout Middle East by:
• The bedouins are nomads who organized into clans, the clans provide safety

MAJOR OCCUPATION

• A major occupation is trade. Trade was very important in Middle East
• They improved old practices by inventing checks
• Checks helped trading easier, merchants could trade in the check for cash

MUSLIM EMPIRES

• Muslim empires controlled many areas, such as:
• Modern day Iraq, Iran, and central asia

ABBASID EMPIRE & UMAYYADS

• The Abbasid fought the Umayyads for control of the Middle East for:
• The Umayyads wanted to keep Muslim states unified
• The Abbasid won the battle and the Umayyads moved to Spain

UMAYYAD EMPIRE

• Under the Umayyad empire they moved to Spain once the Abbasid won the battle
• Most of Spain became a Muslim state, the capital became Cordoba
• Cordoba became the largest and most impressive city by 900AD

SHARI'A

• Shari'a is a code and religious law
• Shari'as main aspect are about marriage and divorce
• You can't swear, have sexual relation, shave, clip nails

ISLAMIC CULTURE ACHIEVEMENTS

• One Islamic culture achievement was the House of Wisdom
• The House of Wisdom was a huge library were most people went to.
• People went there to study and eerie improved were mathematics, science, agriculture
