Recent surveys are revealing what most new-home buyers are considering as "must-have" features.

According to PulteGroup's executive VP of homebuilding operations, marketing and sales, "They're looking for more efficient use of space and a greater area allocated to 'workhorse' spaces, like the kitchen. Home buyers want unique features...even if they have to pay more."

spacious closets

The National Association of Home Builders conducted a recent survey and found that walk-in closets in the master bedroom are the most requested amenity. 31% of those surveyed said they would sacrifice another household feature to have His and Her closets.

fancy laundry rooms

Home buyers also want laundry rooms with skylights, built-in ironing boards, upgraded appliances and extra space for storage and folding clothes.

Everyone wants to cut their utility costs.

Today's home buyer wants greater energy efficiency, low-e windows, programmable thermostats and Energy Star appliances.

nine-foot ceilings

Standard 8' ceilings are out as well. More and more home buyers are asking builders to stretch higher and want 9' ceilings on the first floor.
