I believe in a growth mindset

I believe...

  • Anyone can develop or acquire talents or intelligence at any time in life.
  • With hard work, grit and persistence, we can develop our knowledge and attain new skills.
  • A fixed mindset is very limiting and can be used as an excuse or a crutch for not trying or putting in effort.

My Upbringing

How my mindset was influenced early on in my life

What has shaped my mindset:

  • My parents always instilled in my brothers and me that you "can do anything if you put your mind to it."
  • They enrolled us in many different kinds of activities and sports. They encouraged us to try and learn new things

What has shaped my mindset:

  • My teachers and my parents taught me to learn and grow from the process and not just focus on the out come.
  • From an early age, we were taught that it's OK to fail.
  • Success = hard work and commitmnet

Mindset

The New Phychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D

What I learned about the FIXED mindset:

  • Believing that your qualities 'are what they are' creates an urgency to prove yourself in the classroom, in relationships and in your career.
  • If your traits, like your intelligence, athleticism, humor, etc., are fixed, then you better prove that you were dealt a 'good hand'.
  • Fixed mindset people choose success before growth

What I learned about the GROWTH mindset:

  • The mindset that believes qualities and skills can be developed creates a passion for learning.
  • This mindset allows people to thrive during difficult times.
  • This mindset feels that a person's true potential cannot be known because you cannot foresee what can be done with years of training and hardwork

SOOOO....

HAS MY MINDSET CHANGED?

Yes, it's become stronger!

  • The class material has confirmed and enhanced my strong belief in a growth mindset.
  • I feel that I can use my strong belief that anyone can succeed to encourage my students.

Growth mindset in the classroom

How I can help my students grow

Failure

  • Praise BOTH failure and success
  • Help students learn from failure by helping them identify what they can do next time to improve.

Process

  • Encourage students to focus on the process of learning and not the outcome (their grade).
  • Reward students for small successes during the learning process.

Praise hardwork

  • When students accomplish a task or reach a goal, praise them on their hard work and grit, not their on intelligence.

Be mindful!

  • Be aware and mindful that your students will come from different backgrounds and different households.
  • Some will be raised by parents with growth mindsets while others will be raised with parents who have fixed mindsets.

Students who come from a fixed mindset family

  • Will need to become open and accepting of failure.
  • Learn that they can learn from a process.
  • Learn that they can do ANYTHING they put their mind to.
  • Focus on what they can do with hard work rather than what they know.
