slavery

  • Slavery was 40% of the southern population
  • there were people trying to get rid of it they were called abolitionists.
  • The north wanted to get rid of it.
  • The south wanted to keep slavery 
  • The south waned to have slaves  do all their work they were to lazy

states rights

  •  The Missouri Compromise in 1820 tried to solve the problem but succeeded only temporarily
  • There was a debate over which powers rightly belonged to the states
  •  and which to the Federal Government
  • North and the South became more and more different, their goals separated

abolition movement

  • The goal of the abolitionist movement was the immediate
  • emancipation of all slaves.
  • and the end of racial discrimination and segregation
  •  Radical abolitionism was partly fueled by the religious fervor

harriet beecher stowe

  • Harriet Elisabeth Beecher was born June 14, 1811
  • She wrote "Uncle toms Cabins"
  • Famous author 
  • Numerous articles, and journalsher 
  • essays and short stories regularly published in newspapers

compromise of 1850

  • It was a series of bills passed mainly to address issues related to slavery.
  • The Compromise of 1850 is composed of five statues enacted in September of 1850
  • drafted by Whig Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky
  •  brokered by Clay and Democrat Stephen Douglas, avoided
  • secession or civil war and reduced sectional conflict for four years.

Kansas nebraska act

  • It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska
  • defused a four-year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states
  •   Texas would relinquish the land in dispute but be given 10 million dollars 
  • The idea of this act was to make many thousands of new farms and maker 

John brown

  •  first white American abolitionistst 
  • believed violence would stop southerners
  • he commanded many forces

dred scott vs. sanford

  • court ordered slaves that were not citizens of the united states  
  • they got no protection
  • congress could not ban/ get rid of slavery in a federal territory  

election of 1860

  • Major event leading up to the civil war 
  • Abraham Lincoln won the election
  • southerners were ready to secede
  • Southerners thought that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery.

I believe that slavery was the most important issue that caused the Civil War. because there was so much tension between the north and the south.
