IAPETUS

FROM GREEK MYTHOLOGY

Untitled Slide

Iapetus was known as the god of mortality and/or the titan of mortality. The name Iapetus is a Greek word meaning to pierce, usually with a spear. He is the son of Uranus and Gaea, husband to Clymene, and father to Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Menoetius. He is often represented by the pillar of the west, or a gecko.

Iapetos and his brothers trapped their father as he descended to lie with Mother Earth. They were put at the four corners of the world where they seized hold of the Sky-God, and held him there while Kronos castrated him with a sickle. Iapetus was the west pillar, with his brothers at the other three corners/pillars.

NUT

FROM EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY

Untitled Slide

Nut was known as a goddess of the sky, and/or proctress of the dead. She is often represented by a female figure arched over Shu with a water pot on her head. She is the daughter of Shu and Tefnut, sister to Geb(which is who she fell In love with), and mother to Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys, and Horus. Nut is also known for swallowing the sun-god, Ra, and giving birth to him the next morning.

Nut and Geb were born together in a tight embrace, therefore the sun god Ra demanded Shu to separate them. Ra climbed onto Nut's back and asked her to lift him into the heavens. As Nut got higher she got dizzy, and Shu held up her middle body. This made Nut's body the sky, and Ra attached stars to her.
