Early childhood

  • When Nadia Boulanger was a little girl she got an early education at Conservatoire de Paris.
  • She gave up on writing music (composer) because she believed she did not have the talent for it.
  • After giving up on composing she then decided she was gonna be a teacher.
  • She then influenced many young composers (at that time) to be great musicians just like her.

Teaching

  • Nadia Boulanger was a french composer and a teacher at Paris Conservatorie
  • She taught lots of famous people including, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, and Ray Harrison
  • She was taught by Gabriel Fauré, once she was told how to play music with instruments, she then became a teacher for 70 years!

Family

  • His mother, Raissa Myshetskaya, was a singer, Russian princess, and a teacher was the first person to teach Nadia Boulanger music.
  • Her dad, Ernest Boulanger, was a composer and a conductor at Paris Conservatorie.
  • Her only sister, Lili Boulanger, was a composer just like Nadia. She won many awards like the Prix de Rome
  • Her grandfather, Frédéric Boulanger, was a French cellist and a professor of singing, he also played the cello.

Why she is still important

  • Nadia Boulanger is still important to this day for teaching so many 20th century composers, helping them made music much easier and helpful.
  • She won many different awards like the Prix de Rome and many others.
  • She also inspired others by playing the organ and the piano.

BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD?

  • Nadia Boulanger is titled the best teacher in the world because of teaching so many 20th century musicians.
  • “The most influential teacher since Socrates” is how leading contemporary composer describes Nadia Boulanger.
  • Although she was the best teacher it didn’t last, once her sister Lili died she ceased composing, calling her songs “useless”.

  • The composition was worked on till 1909 to 1912.
  • Pugno, her composer buddy worked on the composition with her but sadly died before it could premiere on January 3rd, 1914.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HER SISTER?

  • After Lili Boulanger sadly died, Nadia felt sad and unhappy about herself.
  • She thought that leading to Nadia’s fame might have caused the death of Lili.
  • She wrote songs for Lili and wrote many private messages for Lili after she had passed.

NADIA’S DATE JOURNAL

  • Nadia felt like she caused her sisters death so she threw herself into domestic responsibility, she then wrote her own date journal saying “I place this new year before you, my little beloved Lili–may it see me fulfill my duty towards you–so that it is less terrible for Mother and that I try to resemble you.”

WHERE DID SHE TEACH?

  • Nadia Boulanger taught at many different places inside of the US and England.
  • She worked with the music academy which are the following, Juilliard, Longy, Royal College Of Music, Royal Academy of music and many more.
  • Her principal base for most of her life was her family’s flat in Paris, that’s where she taught for almost 7 decades.
