lILI BOULANGER

  • was very close with Nadia
  • first woman to win the Prix de Rome
  • family friend, Gabriel Faure, discovered she had perfect pitch when she was two
  • She suffered from chronic illness, beginning with a case of pneumonia at age two, leading to the intestinal tuberculosis that ended her life at the age of 24
  • Nadia, Lili, and their parents were all buried in the same tomb

  • married when he was 62 and Raissa was 20

CHILDHOOD

  • born in France

  • studied compositions under Faure and Debussy

DEATH

  • died on October 22, 1979 at 92
  • in her apartment in Paris
  • had been in a coma for three weeks
  • had been in failing health for over a year
  • was blind and in a wheelchair before death

  • was the first woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a full concert
  • She liked to be known as “Mademoiselle”
  • hated music until Lili was born
