"After taking the unprecedented step of initiating a review of the drug’s prescription status, Health Canada put forward an amendment to the prescription drug list to allow non-prescription use of naloxone specifically for emergency use for opioid overdose outside hospital."

"Naloxone, when indicated for emergency use for opioid overdose outside hospital, is available as a Schedule II drug. Any patient or patient’s agent are now permitted to obtain Schedule II naloxone directly from any community pharmacist without a prescription."

All pharmacies are eligible to provide naloxone emergency kits AT NO COST to 1) a person who is either currently using opioids or is a past opioid user who is at risk of returning to opioid use, or 2) a family, friends or other persons in a position to assist a person at risk of overdose from opioids.

"A meeting of the National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee (NDSAC) was held on December 5, 2016 with the following Interim Recommendation(s) made:
naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray, when indicated for emergency use for opioid overdose outside hospital settings, be granted Schedule II status."

What You Need

  • 2 naloxone amps and 2 safety syringes OR
  • 1 carton of naloxone nasal spray (2 doses)
  • Other: Alcohol wipes, training card, amp snapper etc

Pharmacists are more willing to dispense naloxone when they are confident in their ability to identify risk factors for opioid overdose.

Who Can/Should Get a Kit

  • 100mg of morphine or equivalent
  • Hx of overdose, illicit/recreational use
  • Methadone patients
  • Opioids & lung disease, EtOH, sedatives
  • On release from rehab or prison
  • Parents of teens if concerned
  • Opioid use with kids in the house
  • Opioids in rural and remote communities
