Food

  • Men hunted deer and small animals; they also fished for food
  • Little boys watched men hunt, while girls learned to sow.

General Info

  • Because the Europeans came to America, the Nanticoke had to move to from Maryland toDelaware.
  • The Nanticoke has a population of 500 descendants, yet they used to have 200 people

Housing

  • Long house were used for meetings and tribal gatherings, but they used sweat lodges for spiritual cleansing.
  • A normal sized family lived in a small hut called a Wigman,whereas other tribes lived in teepees.
  • Since the Nanticoke had sweat lodges, they could access their inner spirits.

Birth/ Death Ceremonies

  • When a tribe member died they were put into a structure called a Qiackerson, rather than being put in a small grave.
  • Because a children name might be so long, a child would beijg given a nickname at birth.
  • Baby at birth was celebrated because of the of the meaning of life.

Weaponry

  • Nanticoke used bows and arrows; even though, the british used guns and cannons.
  • Since there was hardly any large animals, the Nanticoke used traps to hunt small animals.

Becoming a Man

  • Once a child prove themselves worthy, a male child can become a kid.

Transportation

  • The Nanticoke traveled along the Delaware River, because this was their only means of transportation.
