1769-1785

  • Napolean Bonaparte was born on the Mediterranean island of Corsica
  • Napoleon finished school at age 16, and became a lieutenant in artillery in 1785.

1795

  • Napoleon defended the delegates in October
  • Royalist rebels marched on the National Convention
  • Towards the end, he became the hero of the hour and hailed throughout Paris
  • became the savior of the French republic

1796

  • Directory appointed Napoleon to lead the French army
  • Defended the army against Austria and Sardinia
  • Haratio Nelson defeteated his naval forces-British

1799

  • Directory lost its favor on the French people
  • Napoleon took action to seize political power again in early November
  • He took power first and was named the title first consul
  • Assumed the powers of dictator
  • Coup' état- a sudden seizure in politcal power

1799-1802

  • Britain, Austria, and Prussia join forces against Napoleon
  • Three nations signed peace agreements after this diplomacy was over
  • 1802- Europe was at peace

1800

  • A plebiscite was held to create a new constitution
  • It was a vote of the people
  • It have Napoleon all of the real power

1801-1804

  • Napoleon signed an agreement, concordat, with Pope Pius VII
  • Established a new relationship between the Church and state
  • He decides to take back his colony and restore his sugar-producing industry-1801
  • He called himself emperor
  • Walked down the long isle of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

1805

  • Battle of Austerlitz was finished and he issued a proclamation
  • Forced his enemies to sign peace treaties
  • Made him create a large empire, but his last enemy was Britain
  • Battle of Trafalgar was taken place off the southwest coast of Spain
  • Napoleon was defeated by Horatio Nelson's fleet

1812

  • Napoleon had many victories in the 1800s
  • Controlled independent countries and most of the French Empire
  • His reign was only five years- 1807-1812

1806-1808

  • Napoleon set up a blockade and called the policy the Continental System
  • Wanted continental Europe more self-sufficient
  • Wanted to destroy Great Britain's commercial and industrial economy
  • Sent an invasion throughout Spain and guerrilas struck French armies in Spain
  • Peninsula War weakened the French Empire and forced the French out of Spain

1812

  • Russian czar stop selling grain to Britain
  • Napoleon invades Russia
  • Battle of Bordino- Napoleon wins and moves to Moscow
  • Britain, Russia, and Prussia go against Napoloen again

1813-1814

  • Faced European powers in Leipzig
  • Napoleon's army was pushed back to Paris
  • Surrendered and gave up his throne
  • Was banished to Elba, tiny island off the Italian coast

1815-1821

  • Escaped Elba and went to France
  • Attacked the British army in a tiny village called Waterloo
  • Defeat eneded his power forever- The Hundred Days
  • Was shipped to St. Helena and was in exile for six years
  • Died in 1821 by a stomach ailment or cancer
