MANZANAR CONCENTRATION CAMP

BACKGROUND

  • 1942 Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor
  • 1942 executive order to relocate Japanese from Hawaii
  • Japanese americans were taken to "relocation camp"
  • Called relocation camp but surrounded by barbed wire and gurards

LIFE AT CAMP

  • Everyone in camp was assigned duties
  • Japanese were allowed to play sports in spare time
  • People had jobs such as nurses, mess hall workers, and teachers

LIVING CONDITIONS

  • Very little privacy
  • Summer temperatures easily above 100 degrees
  • Winter temperatures below 20 degrees
  • No air conditioning
  • Constant dust in barracks led to many Japanese having asthma

FAMILY TIES

  • My great grandpa Hideo Baba was one of many Japanese Americans held in camp
  • Born November 18, 1920 in Irvington, California
  • Graduated from Washington high school 1939
  • 1942 taken to tanforan, California race track where he lived in the stables with family
  • Then taken to Manzanar with family where he worked in the mess hall

AFTER THE WAR

  • Manzanar camp lasted from 1942-1945
  • In 1945 United States allowed Japanese to move out of camp in inland areas
  • Hideo then moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked in a steel mill
  • After the war it is ironic that the volunteer Japanese Nisei were the most decorated army unit in WW2

HOW THIS AFFECTED MY FAMILY

  • Hideo affected my family because of his hard work
  • He worked in the camp and also farmed at his home
  • He birthed a son who is my grandpa and also is a hard worker
  • My family is now thankful that we didnt have to go through this
