MAIN IDEAS

  • Growing nationalism led to the construction of many important roadways.
  • The Missouri Compromise helped settle an important conflict between the states.
  • The election of 1824 led to many fights and arguments within the government.

NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

  • Cumberland Road was the first federally built road
  • It began in Illinois and ended in Maryland.
  • Canals were also built to help move supplies around the countries.
  • One of the most important canals is the Erie Canal...

ERIE CANAL

  • The Erie Canal ran from Albany to Buffalo in the state of New York.
  • It allowed for goods and people to move between the East Coast and towns on Lake Erie.
  • It also allowed for funding for future canal building

  • Clay also created the Missouri Compromise which kept the balance between the free and slave states...

DISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN DIFFERENT REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES

MISSOURI COMPROMISE

  • The Missouri Compromise stated three things.
  • 1. Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state.
  • 2. Maine would enter Union as a slave state.
  • 3. Slavery would be prohibited in any new states north or south of Missouri’s southern border.

ELECTION OF 1824

  • Andrew Jackson won the popular vote, but he did not have enough electoral votes
  • This caused the House of Representatives to choose a winner
  • The House chose John Quincy Adams
  • People thought that Adams had made a corrupt bargain with Henry Clay
  • This was supported when Adams chose Clay for Secretary of State
  • This weakened Adams’ support
