DESERT SOUTHWEST

The Desert Southwest people built houses made from adobe. Adobe is sun-dried bricks made of clay mixed with straw. Some wood was used to make the roofs.

They also built hogans as homes. Indians built hogans by covering a wooden frame with bark and mud, but later they began to cover the wooden frame with adobe.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST

The Pacific Northwest people built longhouses. Longhouses are usually 60 feet long. They have a frame made of wooden poles. Planks, or white boards, were used to cover the walls.

The Plains Indians built lodges. Lodges are circular houses built from earth over a shallow pit. They were covered with sod, a layer of soil held together by the roots of grasses. They were also covered with grasses and animal skins.

They also made tepees. Tepees are cone-shaped tent. They built tepees by placing wooden poles in a circle and tying them together at the top. The poles were then covered by buffalo skins.

EASTERN WOODLANDS
