*Indian Removal Act*

  • Jackson felt Indians were inferior/wanted land
  • Convinced Congress to pass bill in 1830
  • Forcibly moved NAs west of Mississippi Rv.
  • Trail of Tears: 16,000 NAs forcibly moved west
  • 4,000 Died - exposure, disease, starvation

Dawes Act 1887

  • Help NAs assimilate into American society
  • Broke up reservations into smaller units
  • 160 acres family/80 acres individual
  • Western lands desert, not good for farming
  • NAs not accustomed to farming

Battle of Wounded Knee

  • Dec. 20, 1890
  • US government massacres over 300 Sioux
  • End to NA military resistance in West

Johnson vs mcintosh 1823

  • Two Party's were trying to purchase land
  • McIntosh wins (bought land from congress)
  • Johnson looses because NA had no right selling land

Worcester v. Georgia 1832

  • Samuel Worcester main representative for Cherokees 
  • State of Georgia had made clear attempts to remove Cherokees 
  • Chief Justice John Marshall ruled in favor of Cherokees 
  • Georgia ignored Supreme Court's ruling, continued to try and remove them
