NATIVE AMERICANS

UTES

  • Lived in Colorado longer than any other tribes
  • Along the mountains, mesas and San Luis Valley
  • They called themselves Nuche

CHEYENNES

  • Lived on the eastern plains of Colorado
  • They were fishermen, now grow crops
  • They were horseback riders and buffalo hunters
  • They used buffalo for everything they needed to survive

ARAPAHOS

  • Joined forces with the cheyennes, to protect eachother
  • Used sign language to communicate
  • Moved often to keep up with the buffalo
  • Known as 'big nosed people' or 'traders'

CHILDREN

  • Chores like keeping village clean, help their parents
  • Their dolls were made of buffalo, decorated with paint and beads
  • Learned stories told to them by their elders
  • Gathered nuts, berries, and water to help with cooking

THE BEAR DANCE

  • Celebrating the end of hibernation
  • It was an old ute legend that the bear taught the men to dance
  • Utes hold the dance every spring
  • They came together, ute families lived far apart

THE HORSE

  • Indians started by foot
  • Spanish brought horses when traveled here
  • Indians traded and stole horses
  • First where for used to carry heavy loads
  • Then used for riding, so then we could travel farther

BISON

  • Hides and fur were used for robes, blankets, tipi covers, rugs and shields
  • Horns were used for spoons and headdresses
  • Hair was used for rope
  • Bones were spear points, sewing needles and other tools

  • Tails were used as flyswatters
  • Sinews were used for thead
  • Meat was eaten
  • Tongues were made into brushes
