NATURAL AND MAN-MADE FIBER PROJECT

NATURAL FIBERS

  • Cotton
  • Silk
  • Wool
  • Flax

ADVANTAGES OF COTTON

  • Extremely versatile, strong and durable
  • Comfortable and soft
  • Absorbs moisture
  • Doesn't cling or pill
  • Dyes easily

DISADVANTAGES OF COTTON

  • Not resilient or elastic
  • Wrinkles unless treated
  • Shrinks in hot water unless treated
  • Will mildew
  • Flammable

SILK - ADVANTAGES

  • Natural luster
  • Strong yet light weight
  • Smooth
  • Absorbs moisture

SILK DISADVANTAGES

  • Weakened by sunlight and perspiration
  • Cannot be ironed on high temp.
  • May yellow with age.
  • May water spot

WOOL ADVANTAGES

  • Very versatile and resilient
  • Provides warmth
  • Durable and absorbs moisture
  • Naturally flame resistant
  • Resists abrasion

WOOL DISADVANTAGES

  • Damaged by moths and other insects
  • Shrinks and mats
  • May pill
  • Absorbs odor

FLAX ADVANTAGES

  • Stronger than cotton
  • Comfortable and soft
  • Absorbs moisture
  • Durable and lint free
  • Dries faster than cotton.

FLAX DISADVANTAGES

  • Not resilient
  • Wrinkles easily
  • Shrinks unless treated
  • WIll mildew
  • Hard to remove creases

POLYESTER ADVANTAGES

  • Excellent wrinkle resistance
  • Dries quickly
  • Blends w/ other fibers
  • Retains heat-set pleats and creases
  • Resistant to abrasion

POLYESTER DISADVANTAGES

  • Absorbs oily stains
  • Low absorbency of moisture

POLYESTER PRODUCTION

MICROSCOPE

Spandex
Advantages- stretchy, durable, comfortable, moveable,
Disadvantages- heat sensitive, traps moisture, slippery on surfaces, shows everything

POLYESTER CLOTHING

Microfibers
Advantages- long lasting, lint free, regulates body temp.

KEVLAR

BULLETPROOF VEST

ACRYLIC

  • Advantages-flexible, light, cheap, durable, very soft
  • Disadvantages- sustainable to mildew, dry-cleaned
  • Care- dry cleans

OLEFIN

  • Advantages- abrasion resistant, inexpensive, static resistant, light weight
  • Disadvantes- doesnt absorb water, not dyeable after production.
  • Care- do not dryclean

LYOCELL

  • Advantages- color rich, absorbent, soft, breathable.
  • Disadvantages- shrinks, expensive
  • Care- hand wash, or machine wash in cold water
  • Dry on low heat

ACETATE

  • Advantages- drapability
  • Disadvantages- drys quickly, shrinks, nail polish ruins it
  • Care: dry cleaned

ARMIDS

  • Advantages- no melting point, low flammablity, high strength, low weight
  • Disadvantages- absorb moisture
