work improves the conservation and management of natural resources through interdisciplinary and applied research.

committed to solving natural resource issues and engaging policymakers, land managers and citizens throughout the process. The issue this program today is focusing on is one of great importance in our state.

Our capacity to respond to conservation challenges results from several factors

ability to identify and fill in information gaps necessary for scientifically sound and effective natural resource policy

wildpigs.nri.tamu.edu

One of the ways we can fill in information gaps is by reporting wild pig sightings.

We know there are wild pigs here in Cass County, but the scope of the issue is only ancedotal until we begin gathering data through efforts like this

Why Report?

  • more concrete data on population density
  • identify dangers to our watershed system via wild pigs
  • identify source of potential zoonotic diseases carried by wild pigs
The more credible reports are made the better the quality of information we have concerning the density of populations in areas.... hard to tell other wise because of the range that hogs travel and adaptability

preferance for raparian areas leads to pollution of water sources and ultimately the water shed system

hogs carry diseases that impact livestock--- brucellosis, rabbit fever, the plague-- need to determine if they are in the area where these diseases are diagnosed and could be caused by hogs

What you are reporting

  • Contact information
  • Date of sighting
  • Location (GPS MAP)
  • Location information (GPS Map)
  • Number of juvenile and adults in sounder
  • Type of damage
Name, email, telephone number
location--- county and allows you to find it on GPS map--- nearest stream-- allows for them to determine potential damage to water sheds

if you see the pigs count if you can

7 different types of damage you witness at the sighting

able to upload a photo and add any additional information that you feel is relevant

If you do trap wild hogs or capture them by other legal means, the NRI website has additional information about locations around the state that will buy hogs.

if you process the hogs to eat---165 degrees farenhite to eat and be safe
