  • Born on July 18, 1918
  • Part of the Xhosa Tribe
  • Goes to the University of Witwatersrand
  • Joins the ANC
  • Gets married to Evelyn Mase

NELSON MANDELA

  • Participated in protest and sentenced in Rivonia
  • Sent to Robben Island Prison
  • Offered freedom if he would renounce his violent protests
  • After 27 years, F.W. De Clerk frees Nelson Mandela
  • Awarded in the Noble Piece Prize in 1994

UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRAND LAW SCHOOL

  • Attends the University of Witwatersrand Law School in 1943
  • Witwatersrand University is in Johannesburg
  • Began to follow anti-apartheid groups
  • Followed Anton Lembedi who was an anti-apartheid activist

NELSON MANDELA JOINS THE ANC

  • Nelson Mandela joins in 1944
  • He becomes involved in protests
  • ANC leader was Alfred Bitini Xuma
  • Mandela personally approached the leader
  • Mandela created a youth division with the leader.

1950'S ACTIVISM

  • Involved in civil disobedience to the government
  • The government tried to suppress the anti-apartheid fighters
  • Later in the 1950's, he opened his own law firm
  • He became a supporter of the freedom charter

RIVONIAN TRIAL AND PROTEST

  • Mandela was banned from protesting
  • Mandela was arrested with 10 other ANC leaders
  • Mandela was accused for Civil Disobedience and burning his passbook
  • Mandela was found not guilty but later on got arrested for life in prison
  • Mandela made a very important speech which gained him a lot of followers during the Rivonia Trial

ROBBEN ISLAND

  • Mandela was assigned a small cell
  • Mandela was treated abusively
  • Tried to keep up with current events outside
  • Tried to brake him emotionally and physically
  • He was in jail for 27 years

P.W. BOTHA OFFERS FREEDOM

  • Mandela gets transferred to Polismoore prison
  • P.W. Botha offers freedom to Nelson Mandela in this prison
  • The deal was that he would be freed but he had to oppose majority rule
  • Mandela declines even though he is free, his people aren't

F.W. DE KLERK MEETS AND fREES MANDELA

  • De Klerk succeeded Botha after Botha had a stroke
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall made De Klerk change his policy quickly
  • Therefore he meet with Nelson Mandela in Prison to discuss his freedom
  • He was going to be released unconditionally
  • He is finally freed in 1990

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

  • De Klerk and Mandela received it at the same time
  • Mandela received it because he advocated reconciliation
  • Mandela worked with De Klerk on the specific removal on the Apartheid policy
  • Mandela supported the coalition government among all the racial groups
  • Mandela received the Nobel prize in 1994

  • He was by consent brought in as the new Post Apartheid of South Africa
  • He governed as a moderate
  • Mandela received some opposition from not only white groups
  • Mandela as president was also an inrnational leader
  • He was president from 1994-1999

FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA

  • Currently, AIDS is a big problem of South Africa
  • Modern South African is more fractured without Mandela
