CLASSIFICATION

  • Nematodes are phylum in the kingdom animilia.
  • They are classified as such due to their:
  • Layered exoskeleton known as a citide.
  • Lack of a circulatory system.
  • Rounded worm structure.

EVOLUTION

  • First formed in the ocean.
  • The ancestor species of round worms.

LOCATION

  • Different kinds can be found almost anywhere.
  • May live in anything from quality soil to a human.
  • Enviroments can vary from deserts to ocean trenches.

REPRODUCTION

  • Sexual among most types.
  • The smaller male inserts itself into the female.
  • Some female nematode can have self fertilized eggs.

FOOD

  • Many nematode are parasitic.
  • May use plants or animals as a host.
  • Free-living species have other methods.
  • They feed off of algae, dead organisms, etc.
  • They can even feed off of you!

ROLE

  • Non-parasitic aid in recycling of nutrients.
  • Also helpful for decomposition.
  • Parasitics can be beneficial to their host.
  • Can kill other pest trying to harm plant species.

FUN FACTS!

  • They can range up to 20 inches long.
  • They're the 2nd leading cause of blindness.
  • 1/4 of the world population have nematodes inside them.
  • Most common in North America and Europe.
