NEON WAS DISCOVERED IN 1898 BY...

SIR WILLIAM RAMSAY AND AND MORRIS WILLIAM TRAVERS

THE WORD NEON COMES FROM THE GREEK WORD

NEOS - MEANING NEW

NEON IS A COLORLESS GAS

AND WHEN AN ELECTRIC CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH IT...

IT KICKS OFF ELECTRONS

THAT GIVE RED LIGHT

NEON IS USED MOST COMMONLY FOR ONE THING.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME THAT USE OF NEON?

NEON

LIGHTS!

ARGON KICKS OFF BLUE LIGHT

THESE ARE THE TWO MOST OFTEN USED ELEMENTS FOR THESE LIGHTS

THE RED CAN BE MANIPULATED BY THE GLASS.

BESIDES THE USE OF ARGON, THERE'S NO OTHER WAY TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE LIGHT

NEON IS ALSO USED FOR...

CRYOGENIC PRESERVATION

CRYOGENIC PRESERVATION IS A WAY THAT THINGS CAN BE KEPT

  • For loooooooong periods of time in "good" condition
  • Often people are kept in cryogenic preservation tubes like these
  • It's been speculated that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen (untrue)
  • And it's been CONFIRMED that Ted Williams is currently cryogenically frozen

CLOSEUP!

NEON'S LIQUEFACTION LEVEL IS EXCEPTIONALLY LOW

AND IT MEANS THAT IT'S AN OPTIMAL ELEMENT FOR THE USE OF CRYOGENICS

A FEW DEGREES LOWER IT BECOMES SOLID

ALSO NEON IS USED TO MAKE HELIUM-NEON LASERS

LIKE THIS!

THE WAY IT WORKS IS...

  • The two types of atoms react and excite each other
  • and then revert back to their original states, and
  • emit spontaneous light.

WELLLLLLLL...

I HOPE YOU LEARNED THINGS ABOUT NEON!
