Central Nervous System: The spinal cord and brain. This is the part of the nervous system that controls the main functions.

Peripheral Nervous System:
All the nerve cells that attach to the spinal cord to receive and transmit signals to the brain. (found in arms, legs, organs, etc)

Autonomic Nervous System:
Controls the body functions that we don't have to consciously think about, such as breathing, our heartbeat, and digesting.

Sense organs: organs that gather information from outside sources and relay this information to your nerves. (skin, eyes, mouth, ears, nose)

Neurons:
Also called nerve cells, these are special cells that transmit messages from different parts of your body to your brain.

Dendrites: branched arms of a neuron that receives pulses from other neurons.

Axons: thin fibers (strands) that send messages away from neurons. Remember! Axons send AWAY.

Glial cells: Little cells that protect and surround neurons. They provide support and nutrition.

Brain: the central organ in the nervous system and controls most activities that happen in the body. It consists of the brain stem, cerebrum, and cerebellum.

Spinal Cord: a long, thin, tube of nerve fibers that brings messages to the brain. It reaches from the brain stem to lower back.

Cerebrum: The largest, top part of the brain that controls all voluntary activity.

Cerebellum: Found at the base of the brain, it controls all movement.
