PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NESTORIANISM

WHO?

  • Nestorius was the Patriarch of Constantinople in 428-431
  • He created the Nestorianism heresy

WHAT?

  • He professed that though Mary was the mother of Christ, she was not the mother of God
  • His doctrine fractures Jesus Christ into two separate beings, fully divine and fully human
  • Catholics reject this idea

WHEN?
St. Cyril and Pope St. Celestine rejected this as heretical teachings of Nestorius in August 430, at a council in Rome

CONTINUED
In 431, the Third Ecumenical Council condemned Nestorius' teachings and declared Mary as the true mother of God

CONSEQUENCES

  • Nestorious was removed as patriarch
  • later sent to a monestary
  • in 435, the emperor Nestorious' books to be burned
  • in 436, Nestorius was banished to Egypt where he died

WHY?
The Church claims Nestorianism heretical because it is believed that Jesus is one body, fully divine and human, and also that Mary is the mother of God. This is what we believe as Catholics
