Network Key Words

Computer Studies GCSE

TOPOLOGY

BUS

  • Nodes connected in a daisy chain.
  • In linear sequence of buses.
  • Advantages: easy to connect, good for small networks.
  • Disadvantages: Slow, network shuts down if main cable breaks

RING

  • Node connects to exactly two other nodes.
  • Continuous pathway in ring format.
  • Advantages: performs better than Bus Network
  • Disadvantages: malfunction creates problem for whole network

MESH

  • Each node relays data for the network.
  • All nodes cooperate in the distribution of data.
  • Advantage: Secure, Problems effect only the two nodes.
  • Disadvantage: Expensive.

CLIENT SERVER NETWORKS

LAN

  • Local Area Network.
  • Small geographic area.
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi are used to build LANs.

WAN

  • Wide Area Network.
  • Large Geographic Area.
  • Used by: Businesses, Governments, Organizations.

P2P

  • Peer to Peer
  • Data sent without going through a separate server.
  • Permanent infrastructure that links Devices

PROXY/VPN

PROXY

  • A gateway or sometimes a tunneling proxy.
  • Internet-facing proxy used to retrieve from sources.
  • Front-end to protect access to a server on a private network.
  • Tasks: load-balancing, authentication, decryption or caching.
