I teach US history early America. I start my colonies unit with the New England Colonies. This is just identifying the colonies that we will be discussing.

MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY

  • Founded in 1628
  • Originally located in Plymouth, Massachusetts
  • Most people were puritans
Basic information students need to know about the colony.

LIFE IN THE COLONY

  • Lived in dirt floor huts at first
  • Children did not attend school, but were instead taught religion
  • Set up a local government
  • Colonial jobs included ship builders and fisheries
  • Each town had a meeting house

MBC AND THE NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Had a troubled relationship
  • Native Americans did not believe in owning land
  • Colonists relied on native Americans to learn farming techniques
  • Colonists often viewed native Americans as savages
