FOUNDING OF NEW JERSEY

  • Founded in 1664
  • Founded by Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret
  • Named after the British island of Jersey
  • It was founded for trade and profits

NEW JERSEY RELIGION

  • Not dominated by a specific religion which gave way to religious freedom
  • Quakers,Catholic,Lutherans,Jews, and others lived here.

RELATIONSHIP WITH NATIVE AMERICANS

  • At first, they had a good relationship with Native Americans.
  • They traded with the Native Americans because the Native Americans knew the land.
  • The colonists eventually attacked the Native Americans.
  • Their relationship was ruined after that.

NEW JERSEY FACTS

  • Major towns are Princeton and Trenton
  • It was originally apart of New Netherland
  • It was divided into east and west New Jersey in 1676
  • The colony became a state in December of 1787
