New Jersey Colony (1664-1787)

New Jersey Colony was founded by Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret in 1664.

New Jersey was a Middle Colony.

Religion

NJ had religious freedom for its settlers

The main religions were Catholic and Protestant. Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ was the son of God. NJ did not have the money for churches, so citizens worshipped their God in barns.

Geography

New Jersey is 8,729 square miles

  • To the East & North is New York.
  • South & South East is the Atlantic.
  • To the West is Pennsylvania.
  • Delaware is to the South West of New Jersey.
  • The warmer climate made agriculture and farming easier than in the other colonies.

Economy

NJ had 3 types of currency: coins, bills & bartering.

  • Horses were New Jersey's main livestock.
  • Main crops were: potatoes, hay, wheat, corn and soybeans.
  • Known as a "breadbasket" colony because of its wheat, which was shipped to England.

Fun Facts

  • There were more than 100 battles in NJ during the American Revolution.
  • NJ was home to more than 9,800 farms.
  • NJ became a state on December 18, 1787. It was the third colony among the original 13 to become a state.
  • NJ bartered cattle and horses to other colonies.

Reasons to Move to NJ Colony

  • New Jersey was a very original and free colony because it gave religious freedom to its settlers.
  • New Jersey had many farms which included a house, a yard, a barn and fields. An average farm was 50-150 acres.
  • New Jersey has beautiful scenery which is why today it is known as the Garden State.
