GENES

A unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristics of the offspring.

CHROMOSOMES

A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.

DOMINATE TRAIT

A dominate trait is an inherited characteristic that appears in an offspring if it is contributed from a parent through a dominant allele

RECESSIVE TRAIT

Recessive trait can be carried in a persons genes without appearing in that person.

HEREDITY

The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another.

ALLELE

One of two or more alternatives forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome. Also call allelomorph.

PHENOTYPE

The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its own genotype with the environment.

GENOTYPE

The genetic constitution of an individual organism. Often contrasted with phenotype.

HETEROZYGOUS

Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.

HOMOZYGOUS

Having two identical alleles of a particular gen or genes.

PUNNET SQUARE

a square diagram that is composed of a grid of usually four boxes and is used to calculate and depict all the combinations and frequencies of the different genotypes and phenotypes among the offspring of a cross in accordance with Mendelian inheritance

SEX CELLS

Gametes are an organism’s reproductive cells.
