FOUNDING

  • The New York colony was founded in 1626 by Peter Minuit for the Dutch
  • It was taken over in 1664 by the English and named after the Duke of York
  • It was created for trade and profit

RELIGION AND DEMOGRAPHICS

  • Dutch and British were the two main ethnicities in the New York Colony
  • Other groups were Native Americans (Northern areas of the colony) and African Americans
  • The New York colony was a mix of many religions including puritans, Catholics, and Jews.

POLITICS AND ECONOMY

  • The governor of the New York Colony was royally appointed by the king of England.
  • The citizens of New York were represented by an assembly that met in New York City.
  • New York's economy was affected by the fur trade, the merchant port in New York City, and agriculture along the Hudson River.

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

  • The New York Colony was divided into 12 counties stretching from present day New York City, to upstate New York, to Long Island.
  • The colony also had rolling hills, plains, mountains, rivers, lakes, and harbors.
  • New York has long cold winters and humid, hot summers.
