Ngati ToaRangatira was one of the Mouri tribes to first inhabit New Zealand.

Led by the famous warrior cheif Te Rauparaha they journeyed South out of their homeland until the 1820s, Kawhia in search of a more safe and prosperous land

The Ngati Toas tribe Marae was called takapuwhia. A Marae is a Maori area of land that holds the tribes believes and spirits. It also houses their meeting spot which is called Toa Rangatira

The meeting house, Toa Rangatira stands at the Marae and is a focal point of gathering for the Ngati Toa tribe. In 1980 it was demolished and rebuilt into the one you can see in plimmerton to this day.

The Ngati Toas haka is now performed, even on the sports field, as a remembrance of Te Rauparaha, the cheif who led Ngati Toa to victory.
