Nicene Creed And The Views Of The Church

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS THE NICENE CREED?

  • The Nicene Creed is a Symbol of faith widely used in Christian liturgy
  • It is called Nicene because it was originally adopted in the city of Nicaea (present day Turkey) by the First Council of Nicaea

VERTICAL DIMENSION OF THE CHURCH

  • The vertical aspect of the Church is where God comes to us as Jesus Christ but is mediated in the human nature as of the one Divine Person of the Blessed Trinity
  • Jesus directs us to God the Father through his ministry to us as one divine being, with two natures, human and divine

HORIZONTAL DIMENSIONS OF THE CHURCH

  • Jesus shows us a horizontal aspect of the Church through our interactions with the people around us in our everyday lives
  • We also see horizontal aspects of the church through the mass and other official prayers of the Church

THE FATHER

  • "We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth"

THE SON

  • "We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, born of the father before all women, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with eh father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontus Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end."

THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the father and son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets."
