PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HI, I'M NICK

ENTHUSIASTICALLY NERDY
As you can see, I'm Nick.

Untitled Slide

  • i'm a proud father
  • a fan of bowties
  • likely singing right now
  • background pic unrelated
I have two daughters: one almost ten and one almost a year. They are a handful and are the greatest test of growth and experiential learning i have ever undertaken.

I am a recent fan of bowties. The question of which came first, did i start watching Dr Who because of the bowtie or the other way around still continues at my house.

I do sing frequently, for no purpose and generally jumping songs from one line to the next. It is how my brain processes much like my best friend thinks in movie quotes.

I don't remember the keyword i searched but this was in the results and i thought it wonderfully disjointed from my intent that i had to share it. It reminds me of the anti-depression med commercial for those that are already on anti depression medication.

I work in IT

I DON'T KNOW HOW I ENDED UP HERE
My background was in food and beverage consulting. I worked my way up, not through the kitchens, for i have no culinary talent to speak of, but rather from the dishroom and wait staff to planning and truck driving and management to consulting. I can tell you how to manage a work flow, but can't tell you which dish tastes more refined.

Through a series of fortunate and unfortunate circumstances i needed a job and ended up in tech sales. I failed upward until i found a position consulting and supporting schools as far as educational technology. My passion for this subject has not stopped since. I love supporting people in discovery and creative use of the tools they see everyday and finding new ones that push their limits.

THE IT DEPT

INDISPENSABLE, UNDER APPRECIATED
... but someone has to do it.

I work with some of the greatest minds i've ever met. They push me to better understand human relationships and interactions between systems and methodology.
To support that has been a test of patience at times that has been ultimately rewarding when looking back on it with a positive lens and not a defensive one.
But, next time you see your IT guy, say "thanks" for the fact you haven't noticed a problem with your email for however long, or if you are having problems, support them as they are probably having a worse time of it than you right then.

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

often quietly listening to the needs of others &
As a quick tongued youth, i was instructed to practice active listening. It doesn't come naturally to me and i struggle with it, but often am able to listen and contemplate the input before responding.
This does lead to some people thinking that i don't have anything to say or wasn't focused but my ability to pick apart the information and my response and take the time to view it from multiple angles has led to great insight for myself when making decisions and giving feedback.

SUPERHERO TO SOME

I am the type that says "no, no. Thank YOU." when someone thanks me for doing something. There are those who will always think the thing that comes naturally to you is a magic trick or herculean proportion. Be gracious. It took a lot for me to learn to say "You're welcome."

VILLAIN TO OTHERS

Can't help it. The fact that i know computers and am responsible for them at home and at work does not mean that i caused the printer to catch on fire, but i will do my best to resolve the problem in a timely manner. I can see it in some people's eyes blaming the IT department for deciding to buy that printer in the first place and the long road that printer took to be here on this day when they needed it to print this last minute thing they need it was all designed to impede their progress.

I LIVE BY 80/20 RULES

I think about what 20% of effort will get 80% of the results that i desire.
I find that this evaluation of systems, policies, and methods has increased my efficiency and that of those these decisions have an impact on.

i like to push buttons

BUT ONLY LITERALLY, NOT FIGURATIVELY
i do. That's one of the things led to my wanting to figure out how to fix things that weren't working right.
Now i spend a lot of my time trouble shooting and going "i wonder what will happen if we do this!?"

i dream of things like:

  • integrated technology systems
  • a truly collaborative environment
  • unicorns wearing boxing gloves
  • finishing the work in my backyard
I'm passionate about the things that i do for a living.
I like to see pieces of a whole coming together to make the process easier/quicker/more efficient.
I like that tools derived from these processes often are either created by collaboration or lead to more collaboration as part of a 21st century experience.
**Would you mess with a unicorn wearing boxing gloves? (A: it depends on if he's standing on hind legs or not.)

I have a yard whose size exceeds my enthusiasm to care for it.
