Facts about NICODEMUS

  • Nicodemus was the first African American settlement
  • 350 former slaves moved to northwest Kansas
  • It was the most populated settlement and had about 600 people
  • Settlers started to move 6 miles west to Bogue because the train didi not stop in Nicodemus
  • The first year at Nicodemus was hard for the settlers because they ran out of supplies

about Nicodemus today

  • There is only 20 people living there and 14 of them are descendants from the Nicodemus National Historic Site Website
  • In Nicodemus there is only some restored buildings, but they saved other ones but they were not safe to go in so it is considered not restored
  • It is now a National Park
  • People are allowed to go visit Nicodemus and learn about that only African American Settlement

WHY NICODEMUS IS A NATIONAL PARK

  • It was the only African American settlement
  • It was named after the first slave to buy its freedom
  • Also it is a national park because it is a cultural center for African American
  • All of the descendants of the first settlers come to reconnect with family and friends
