History of Nicodemus
Nicodemus was founded by W.R Hill and W.H Smith to make it an all black town. It started out with 350 settlers and almost doubled its population later. Unfortunately, with the great depression, failure of crops, and not having the railroad go through it many people left. Now Nicodemus is a historical site and is being restored and has 20 residents.
Why is nicodemus a Historic site
Nicodemus is a historic site for a couple of reasons. First, Nicodemus is the last all-black town to the west of the Mississippi river. Also Nicodemus in and old historic town founded in 1877. It also the town represents the role of African Americans in the west. Lastly Nicodemus represents freedom of slaves.
ABOUT IT TODAY
As you know Nicodemus is a historic site with 20 residents and five original restored buildings. Sidewalks, buildings, and streets have been restored and new buildings are being built. At its visitor center there are displays about its history. Nicodemus has annual emancipation celebrations.
Today tourists go to nicodemus.
