ETHNICITIES OF NIGERIA

  • Nigeria consists of about three hundred different ethnic groups.
  • One ethnic group found in Nigeria is the Igbo ethnic group. This is the main
  • ethnic group found in Southeastern Nigeria. Most of the Igbo population is
  • Christian. Another Ethnic group in Nigeria is the Yoruba people.Most of
  • Yoruba people often live in urban areas rather than rural.

MORE ETHNIC GROUPS

  • A large group of Yoruba people live in Lagos, which also
  • happens to be the second largest city by population located in
  • Africa. The Ijaw people are another one of the hundred ethnic groups
  • in Nigeria. They are Nigeria's fifth largest ethnic group,
  • Some of the traditional lands for the Ijaw people is along the Niger River Delta.

  • The Nigerian Civil War began on July. 6th, 1967, and ended in 1970. There
  • were 75,000 fatalities, This is also known as the Biafran War. This war
  • began due to having a large amount of different ethnic groups living in Nigeria.

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • Some natural resources in Nigeria include natural gas, coal,
  • iron-ore and clay, gold, salt, uranium, and oil. In Akwa Ibom State, you can
  • find natural resources such as Limestone, zinc, and lignite.
  • Natural resources such as Gypsum and Manganese can be found in Bayelsa State.

  • One industry in Nigeria is the oil industry. Nigeria is the
  • tenth largest oil producing country in the world, and the third
  • largest oil producing country in Africa. The mining industry, is the largest
  • industry to Nigeria. This includes the oil and natural gas industries.

  • miles. The total area is 356,667 sq miles long.

AGRICULTURE

  • Fishing and lumbering are part of the agriculture in Nigeria. Nigeria
  • also had a variety of climates, which allows them to grow tons of different
  • cash crops. Bananas, beans,yams, and cocoa beans are just a few if the many
  • cash crops grown and sold here. Oil however, is what helps with most of Nigeria's
  • GDP. Cattle herding is also an important part of agriculture here.

EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

  • Nigeria has been improving on its education system over the years, but
  • they still have a long way to go before they are as good as the United States.
  • The current literacy rate of Nigeria is 72%. There are three years of primary schooling
  • ,Three years of Junior secondary schooling, three years of Senior secondary schooling,
  • and four years of a university education. The first six years are required for everyone.

CLIMATES IN NIGERIA

  • Nigeria is located in the tropical zone,yet they still have a variety of
  • climates. Moist air masses moves into Nigeria from the At,antic ocean, while
  • hot, dry air comes up from the south. The rainy season begins in the south, around
  • the coastal areas. It begins in late. February,into March, and travels North. Rain
  • last normally until August. The coastal areas see the most rain in May,June, and October.

NIGERIA'S CLIMATE

  • Northern Nigeria normally has the most rainfall in August.
  • The temperatures in Nigeria can reach to around 73 degrees
  • to 88 degrees in January, during the dry season. Some temperatures
  • reach to 110 degrees during the dry season, and 42 degrees in the rainy season.
