Night chapters

BY: Megan Winkle

deaf

Chapter 1 (p. 3-22)
"...she begged us to come with her to her village where she had prepared a self shelter." Wiesel, 20

I picked deaf as my word because him and his family are very unaware of the situation and do not realize the opportunities that they had to all survive.

My picture represents the whole family being totally ignorant and naive, and I chose it because the headphones show the "noise" being canceled out.

I picked the quote above because it's one of the many opportunities they had to get away before going to the death camp.

escape

Chapter 2 (p. 23-28)
"Some pressed against the bars to see. There was nothing. Only the darkness of the night" Wiesel, 25

I picked escape as the name of this chapter because that's what it's all about. The Jews being forced to leave and abandon their belongings.

My picture represents the interminable nights in the cattle cars with lack of food and other needed resources.

I picked the quote above because Mrs. Schachter was the lady who continued to shout about the fire and all anybody could see was the terror and darkness of the night.

Birth

Chapter 3 (p. 29-46)
"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed."
(Wiesel, 14)

"... he slapped my father with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on the floor. I stood petrified." (Wiesel, 39)

I chose birth as my chapter name because his character is changing and he's not the same person he was. He's being reborn as a new him.

My picture represents the change in character and beliefs. He has been dehumanized and stripped of his uniqueness and equality.

I have two quotes the first representing the first night that he will never forget, the night that will haunt him for forever. The second representing the change and how quickly he had been dehumanized.

misery

Chapter 4 (pg. 47-65)
"...block after block, flied past the hanged boy and stared at his extinguished eyes, the tongue hanging from his gaping mouth. The Kapos forced everyone to look at him squarely in the face."

I chose misery as my chapter name because at this point that's all they can think about and feel. The dreadful nights and days that replay in their heads.

My picture represents a prisoner being locked up for his beliefs and not having that freedom. He's reading a bible and practicing his or her religion.

My quote represents a time that I bet many inmates thought was miserable to see. They were forced to watch something unpleasant and uncalled for.

oblivious

Chapter 5 (pg. 66-84)
"After the war, I learned the fate of those who had remained at the infirmary. They were, quite simply, liberated by the Russians, two days after the evacuation." (Wiesel, 82)

I chose oblivious as my word because during this part of the book they are so unaware of what's going to happen next. Ellie was told to stay in the infirmary but didn't and I think the doctor knew they would be saved.

My picture represents a young child upset and confused not knowing what's going to happen. She looks like she's just waiting for something bad to happen.

Linger

Chapter 6 (pg. 85-97)
"Sweat was running down my forehead and my back. This was it; the end of the road." (Wiesel,94)

I picked linger as my word because he doesn't expect to be there long and to them and Ellie it feels like forever.

My picture represents a man weak and lying down. He's hungry and is in dire need of food and assistance.

I picked this quote because during this time they were on a long never ending road that felt like forever.

Discard

Chapter 7 (pg. 98-103)
"We received no food. We lived on snow; it took the place of bread. The days resembled the nights, and the nights left in our souls the dregs of their darkness." (Wiesel 100)

I picked discard as my word because people are being thrown and tossed like animals and being left behind.

My picture is a cattle car with people being kicked of because they are angering the crown or are dead and being discarded while the officers watch and don't care.

I picked this quote because it's a big part of dehumanization and they were in rough living conditions.

guilt

Chapter 8 (pg. 104-112)
"Every day, my father was getting weaker. His eyes were watery, his face the color of dead leaves." (Wiesel 107)

I picked guilt as my word because Ellie in his head
My picture represents Ellie when he has a small feeling that he wants his father to die so he can take care of himself but feels guilty because he loves his father.

My picture represents a man upset and covering his face because he doesn't know what to feel.

I picked this quote because his father is currently dying and he doesn't know if he should put more attention on his dad then himself.

Visions

Chapter 9 (pg. 113-115)
"From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me." (Wiesel 115)

My pictures represents Ellie being relieved and thankful it's over but because of that one night he will never forget the visions.

My picture represents a man on his knee almost praying because he is done and it is almost over.

My quote is him talking about how he never recognized himself and how he is not the person he was before the camps.
