WHAT DOES "NIGHT" SYMBOLIZE?

  • Night symbolizes the unknowing, the darkness, and the grimness in survival of life. Night is something you have to get over- like an obstacle.
  • In the text, Elie is always trying to keep himself and his father alive- he is always aspiring for more food, more water, and more rest.
  • In other words, life is mysterious, dark, and hard- just like the night.

Night symbolizes the opposite.

how does this relate?

  • Elie is constantly trying to survive with his father on rations and work.
  • Elie is constantly trying to increase his faith in his God.
  • Elie is constantly trying to stay alive and away from the Nazis.
  • Therefore, the symbolization of "night" shows us how the character struggles to achieve his goals in the story.
