Night of Broken Glass

by Colton tippins

Why is it called the Night of Broken Glass? It is called that because shards of broken glass littered the street from the Jewish owned stores and synagogues after the Nazis attacked the Jews.

When? November 9-10, 1938 Where? Throughout Germany & Austria

Why did this happen?
This happened because Hitler, the leader of the Nazis, did not like the Jews because of the way they treated him as a kid. He wanted to kill the Jews or hurt them. He coordinated a series of attacks against the Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria.

When the Nazi's attacked, the Jews tried to fight them to get stop. This led to a horrific night for the Jews. That night there were many fires and deaths. Later on over 30,000 Jews were arrested.

What was the result?

  • Many homes were burned down
  • Families were separated
  • Businesses were destroyed
  • 30,000 Jews were arrested & put in concentration camps
  • 1,000+ synagogues were destroyed
  • Schools were demolished
  • Many people lost their loved ones

This was the worst attack on the Jews and was the beginning of the Holocaust.
